MOSTe December 2023 Newsletter

Dear MOSTe Family,

Warm holiday greetings to you all! Please join me in congratulating our seniors who have submitted their UC and CSU applications. I had the privilege of reading some of their personal essays, and once again I am inspired by their deep commitment to education, their work ethic, and their determination to make life better for their families and communities.

At this dark time of the year, and at what can feel like a dark time in the world, I find it helpful to focus on where we can create and share light. I am grateful to support the efforts and success of our MOSTe scholars, and to all of you for making this work and their achievements possible.

We thank The Insurance Industry Charitable Trust for their generous grant, and look forward to showing appreciation to our amazing mentors at our holiday gathering this weekend.

Alumnae – we hope to see you at our annual Homecoming Brunch on January 6, 2024. Please RSVP ASAP, if you haven’t done so already!

Onward,

Amy Ludwig

Whittier College Tour
December 2, 2023

Earlier this month, MOSTe students visited Whittier College! Students participated in an information session with an admissions counselor, then explored the lovely campus on a tour led by two current students. Afterwards, we ate brunch at the dining hall, and students reflected on what they liked or did not like about the school. This kind of exposure and consideration is key to helping students make informed college choices.

Upcoming Events

MOSTe MLK Day of Service

MOSTe is partnering with Grow Good for this year’s MLK Day of Service on Monday, January 15th! Grow Good is an urban garden in Los Angeles that partners with the community to grow fresh food, create jobs and offer wellness programs. MOSTe students will participate in a range of activities at the garden!

MOSTe Day at Cal State Long Beach

Join us for a day at Cal State Long Beach on Saturday, January 27th! We will be attending a play at the theater department and participating in a tour of the campus. This is a great opportunity to learn more about Cal State Long Beach and experience what the campus has to offer!

Mentor Moment

“Andrea and I met for dinner where we caught up on life, school, and her internship. We enjoyed a bowl of Alfredo each (both our favorite)!”
– Mentor Isabel

“Jenna and I had an awesome outing together at the Huntington Gardens. We walked around and explored, talked and caught up, and then grabbed lunch together in one of their restaurants. It was a memorable and wonderful time together.” – Mentor Natalie

“Alma and I took our mentees to San Diego to visit two colleges and Birch aquarium. It was a fun day that we’d been planning for quite a while.” – Mentor Carrie

“We went to Sawtelle for matcha and ended up also checking out some shops and a plant nursery!” – Mentor Sage

“I spent time this month texting my mentee about school, and their interests in extracurriculars in and out of school. I also spent time this month talking with my mentee’s mom and I finally was able to take Niara out for a meal. Over lunch, we talked about school and friends and we both did the short and long-term goals sheet.” – Mentor Danielle

“Emma and I had a hang-out day where we went paddleboarding and then grabbed ice cream!” – Mentor Laurie

“Brianna selected Mr. Brainwash Art Museum in Beverly Hills for our joint experience in November. Wonderful choice! The afternoon was spent appreciating the different paintings, sculptures, and photo immersions. Read up on many wise sayings displayed throughout the museum. Afterwards we then stopped at a Johnny Rockets where we got to enjoy an early dinner including their famous milkshakes. We discussed high school life and all the exciting things going on with her academics and extracurricular activities. A day well spent.” – Mentor Daphne
