OUR
BEGINNINGS MOSTE was the brainchild of Dr. Lois Frankel, author and the President of Corporate Coaching International. In researching families and education for her doctorate degree, Dr. Frankel found that young girls from disadvantaged backgrounds were not receiving important information regarding educational and career opportunities. Determined to change this state of affairs, Dr. Frankel, together with representatives from Paramount Pictures, First Interstate Bank, Southern California Gas Company, Southern California Edison, Women in Radio and Television, and the Black Women’s Network, developed the format for MOSTE - a program that would encourage young women of color to not just stay in school, but to do well in school; inform and educate them about the working world; and provide guidance about what it takes to be successful. The formation of MOSTE as a mentoring program was based on the strong belief that a one-on-one relationship between a young girl and a successful professional woman would provide the key to achieving the objectives of MOSTE. In the Fall of 1986, a pilot program with 35 mentors and mentees was begun at Horace Mann Jr. High School in the Los Angeles Unified School District. Since that time, the program has expanded, adding Mount Vernon Middle School in 1988 and Audobon Middle School in 1990. MOSTE continues at Mount Vernon, operates a program at Henry Clay, and in 2003 expanded to Wilson Middle School in the Pasadena Unified School District. |
