Janelle Porter

For many people, choosing a career is difficult. For me, it was quite the opposite. When I started ninth grade, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. While my mother went through chemotherapy, she was very sick and unable to work, which put a strain on our household, financially and emotionally.

I decided then that I would become a doctor and work in a hospital where low income families are treated. I want to contribute to the lives of others to the best of my ability. I want to show the youth that the things surrounding them are not the things that determine how far they can go in the future. Financially, I am disadvantaged, but I am motivated to make things change through my education.

It was this essay that earned Janelle a MOSTE 2004 Achievement Scholarship. But, it was the enduring drive of this incredible young lady that took her from Audobon Middle School to Occidental College, where she is a freshman majoring in Psychobiology.
